Abstract
A semirelativistic model of light quark-antiquark pairs, which is an extension of the phenomenological model of De Rújula, Georgi, and Glashow, is presented. Our model incorporates significant new relativistic kinetic energy effects as well as important relativistic corrections to the potential energy. For definiteness, the potential of Gupta, Radford, and Repko is used to help define the mass parameters. In order to obtain good agreement between theory and experiment, we include quark-antiquark annihilation effects for the 1S mesons and higher-order spin-spin effects for the 2S mesons. We are also successful at identifying numerous meson states between about 900 and 2300 MeV as members of the 1P, 1D, and 1F multiplets. Predictions are given for the locations of 19 missing meson states between 1300 and 2300 MeV.Keywords
