Abstract
Leaf press juices of normal and virus infected potato plants were examined for free amino acids. Amino acids in dialysates of the juices were separated into acidic, neutral and basic fractions by ion exchangers, and the component amino acids then separated by paper chromatography. In both juices the following 22 amino acids and peptides were found: arginine, lysine, histidine, asparagine, aspartic acid, glutamine, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, threonine, alanine, proline, [gamma]-amino-butyric acid, tyrosine, tryptophan, methionine, valine, phenyl alanine, leucine, [beta]-alanine, cystine-cysteine, and glutathione. Semi-quantitative paper chromatography (one-dimensional separation in three solvent systems followed by colorimetric estimation of the eluted copper-ninhydrin complexes) showed that glutamic acid and valine were present in 2-3 times higher concentration in juices from infected plants. The glutathione content (determined in juices expressed from plants fed with s35-sulfate) was the same in normal and infected plants. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
