Induction pattern of liver microsomal alkoxyresorufin o-dealkylases of channel catfish (ictalurus punctatus): Correlation with PCB exposure in situ

Abstract
The hepatic microsomal‐mediated O‐dealkylation of various substituted alkoxyresorufins by channel catfish from Devil's Swamp, a highly polluted river basin ecosystem, has been compared and correlated with the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contents from fat tissues of these fish. The specific activities and the turnover numbers of methoxy‐, ethoxy‐, pentoxy‐ and benzyloxyresorufin O‐dealkylases in Devil's Swamp microsomes was significantly elevated relative to that of channel catfish from a pristene reference site. The results suggest that the pattern of induction of alkoxyresorufin O‐dealkylase activities in Devil's Swamp channel catfish microsomes is consistent with the pattern of induction that would be anticipated following exposure to mixed PCB.Keywords
