Abstract
Records of spontaneous uterine motility were made by the balloon technic on 9 cows at various times during the estrous cycle for a total of 54 observations. At estrus, the contractions were regular, frequent and of small amplitude. In mid-cycle, they were less frequent and of greater amplitude, and there were irregular changes in tone. An activity index of the product of the frequency and amplitude of contraction was used to measure activity. In individual cows the activity did not vary significantly during the cycle but there was a significant difference between the indices of different cows. Ovariectomy decreased it to one half the normal value. Estrogen with or without progesterone returned the activity to normal. Progesterone alone returned the index to normal by increasing the amplitude but not the frequency. Keywords
