Abstract
Over recent years the role of parents in the education of their children has increasingly become a central issue for debate, not least due to the Government's emphasis on parents as key players in the market in education. Drawing on findings from recent research, this paper seeks to investigate the role of parents by focusing on the Annual Parents’ Meeting (introduced by statute in 1986). Typically perceived as a barren exercise, the research investigates the potential of the meeting for a more positive dialogue between parents and schools by placing it in the wider context of parent‐school relationships. Rooted in examples of good practice, the paper offers opportunities for developing the meeting, together with a theoretical model of joint responsibility and a vision of a revitalized public culture. Keywords
