Abstract
The objectives of the current study were to extend the use of in vitro intestinal sac preparations in investigations of intestinal absorption in fish and to describe some features of intestinal absorption. Active transport of D-glucose in intestinal sac preparations from the bullhead catfish was shown; there was no active transport of D-xylose and D-fructose. Population and/or seasonal differences in absorption characteristics were evident in studies from year to year. Low temperatures, 0-2[degree]C, or phlorizin, 5 X 10-4 [image], inhibit the absorption of D-glucose. Nitrogen (100%) anaerobiosis was inhibitory to D-glucose, 10 mg./100 ml., active transport in less than half of the intestinal segments tested, and with 5 mg/100 ml. there was no inhibition of active transport. In an extension of tissues which can be credited with exhibiting active transport, catfish intestine may now be cited in comparative physiology. This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
