A Modified Azo Dye Method for the Localisation and Assessment of Leucocyte Alkaline Phosphatase

Abstract
A modified azo dye method of staining for alkaline phosphatase is described with a simplified scoring scheme for recording results. Its reproducibility appears to be excellent and its simplicity renders it a useful diagnostic test. Alkaline phosphatase scores were assessed 14 cases of chronic granulocytic leukaemia, 37 cases of polycythaemia vera, 7 of myelosclerosis and 2 of thrombo-cythaemia. The results show characteristic differences between some of these diseases, and suggest too that Myleran (busulphan) may, in some cases, change the scores obtained towards normal levels.
