Abstract
The effects of CVF [cobra venom factor] administration on the humoral responses [of mice] to 2 T [thymus-derived] lymphocyte independent immunogens: DNP [dinitrophenyl]-1 Ficoll and DNP polyacrylamide. With high immunogen doses, little or no evidence of suppression was found. When the immunizing dose was reduced, suppression of both Ig[immunoglobulin]G and IgM responses became apparent. The immunosuppressive effect of CVF on T lymphocyte-dependent responses may result from C[complement] depletion and the generation of C cleavage products that may impair the auxiliary contribution of macrophages to the generation of these humoral responses. A similar mechanism may be applicable to the suppression of antibody production to DNP Ficoll and DNP PAA, since a macrophage requirement exists for the response to these immunogens.
