Spinal Taps and Epidermoid Tumors

Abstract
The unoccluded needle has become widely used to perform lumbar puncture in infants and small children because it simplifies the procedure but, unlike the standard needle with stylet, it carries the hazard of cutting free some epidermal tissue and depositing it in the subarachnoid space where it may give rise to a tumor. Several lines of evidence, experimental as well as statistical, are converging to support this view.
