Abstract
The influence of low urine vol. upon urea excretion was studied in 173 individuals representing normals, nephritics, and pregnancy toxemia cases. In all patients, when the urine output falls below about 21 ml. per hr. the "standard urea clearance," calculated in the usual way, gives results considerably too low. The further the urine output falls below the critical vol., the greater the error. The urea concn. ratio fails to increase as the urine output decreases below the critical level. Therefore the assumption upon which the calculation of the standard clearance is based does not hold for low urine vols. The relationship of this finding to low clearances reported in pregnancy toxemias is discussed.
