Abstract
A survey is made of the different types of heart disease associated with cardiac hypertrophy in an effort to detect a predisposing factor which might be common to all; the various hypotheses for the mechanism of myocardial hypertrophy are reviewed. The Horvath-Eyster hypothesis ascribes hypertrophy to the stimulus of dilatation. This might seem satisfactory if definite increases in the heart wt.:body wt. ratio could be demonstrated subsequent to marked myocardial dilatation. This possibility was tested in both rabbits and rats by injecting intraven. a vol. of 12% acacia soln. equal to the calculated blood vol. Avg. wts. of the hearts removed after varying periods of time were not significantly different from those of the controls. Keywords
