Verminous Encephalitis in the Emu

Abstract
An emu Dromaius novaehollandiae with bilateral paralysis, on autopsy showed nematode parasite larvae identified as Ascaroidea within the cerebellum. Liver lesions were present as randomly disseminated multifocal pleomorphic mononuclear inflammatory cell aggregates occasionally associated with adjacent hepatocyte necrosis. Lesions were probably caused by salmonella. No significant histopathological alterations were found in sections of gastrocnemius tendon, spleen, cerebrum or brain stem examined. The diagnosis could not have been made without a necropsy which included histological studies.
