Carotid Rete Mirabile in Man

Abstract
In certain lower animals the principal source of cerebral blood supply is the external carotid artery. This artery fills the circle of Willis via numerous, freely anastomosing vessels arranged in a compact network called the carotid rete or rete mirabile. A case is reported in which 2 such networks were found in association with a hypoplastic internal carotid artery. The first of these lay between the internal maxillary artery and the carotid siphon. The second replaced a segment of the petrous portion of the internal carotid artery. This is believed to be the first recorded instance of such an anomaly in man.
