Abstract
Before beginning prophylaxis in an attempt to lower the risk of a specific threat to life and health, one should make sure that one is not increasing the risk of another such threat. It would therefore be of great interest to learn the overall mortality rates of the subjects studied by Thun and his colleagues (Dec. 5 issue)* to determine the relation between aspirin use and the incidence of fatal colon cancer. As someone who is more interested in continuing to live than in not dying of some particular ailment, I would appreciate seeing more data showing the effects of various interventions on overall mortality. Keywords
