Abstract
Since 95% ethyl alc. or ether applied to the mucosal surface resulted in a marked decrease of the potential difference across the stomach wall the electromotive force apparently originates near the mucosal surface. Application of these agents to the serosal surface usually did not result in a significant change in the potential difference. When an electrode was placed in the submucosa it was found that the electromotive force originates between the submucosa and mucosa and that the changes in potential that occur following histamine and thiocyanate injn. are due to changes in the potential difference between the submucosa and mucosa. Application of alc. directly to the submucosa does not significantly change the potential difference between electrodes on the mucosa and submucosa. It is concluded that the electromotive force originates in the secretory portion of the stomach. Keywords
