Abstract
In this paper we have studied the broadening of a temporal pulse propagating through a planar waveguide with an exponential variation of refractive index using the ray-optics approach as well as the wave-optics approach. The validity of the ray-optics approach has been studied and it has been shown that at large distances the corresponding predictions are not even qualitatively correct. Keywords
