Abstract
A modified rigid-ion model (MRIM) for rutile-structure solids has been developed from an interaction potential which consists of the long-range Coulomb and the short-range overlap repulsion and van der Waals attraction. We have determined the van der Waals coefficients using the Slater Kirkwood variational approach, and have applied the present MRIM to predict the elastic constants and the Raman-active vibration frequencies of MF2 crystals with the rutile structure. Good agreement is generally obtained between the experimental data and our theoretical results. Keywords
