Abstract
Pavlova pinguis Green exhibits fine structural features generally similar to those of the type species of the genus, P. gyrans Butcher. In the present investigation, particular attention has been paid to the haptonema which has been shown to be of the modified type found throughout the Pavlovales. An unusual feature of P. pinguis is the presence of a lamellar body consisting of stacks of flattened cisternae which are dissimilar to those of the Golgi body and often associated with vesicles containing masses of material displaying a whorled or lamellate structure. A revised diagnosis of the species is presented. At present 3 genera comprising 12 species are included in the order Pavlovales. Their characters are compared and a preliminary identification key drawn up. The phylogeny of the order in relation to the Prymnesiophyceae as a whole is discussed.
