Abstract
Four hundred and eighty-two individuals were tested for the presence of endogenous plasma lipemia clearing activity. One milliliter of plasma was incubated for 1 hour with 0.1 ml of 1% coconut oil and changes in optical density were followed. Clearing activity was demonstrated in 112 of the 482 subjects, and incidence of 23%. Since 89 of the 482 were repeatedly tested, the true incidence of positivity with one observation was 18%, as clearing activity varies in the same individual from time to time. There was a statistically significant inverse relationship (P = .01) between plasma clearing factor and the Sf 12–400 lipoproteins, probably significant with the Sf 0–12 lipoproteins. In 69 of 76 individuals the inhibition characteristics of the clearing activity were identical with those of lipoprotein lipase. In 32 patients lipolytic activity (glycerol release) was determined together with clearing activity. These results showed that lipolysis of lesser degree may be occurring without optical density changes. In the presence of demonstrable abnormal liver function the correlation between plasma lipemia clearing factor and lipoproteins is influenced by factors other than enzyme-substrate relationship.
