Abstract
For the problem of electrons in a well potential as a model of a metal with surfaces, exact expressions are derived for the density of states, the surface energy, and for the sum rule for the phases of the wave functions. Incorrect derivations and errors of previous publications are pointed out. The connection between the phase rule and the surface energy is discussed. Keywords
