Intracranial Hypertension

Abstract
New concepts and techniques in the management of patients with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) are reviewed in the context of physiologic and pharmacologic factors, particularly anesthetics, influencing cerebral blood flow and ICP. A protocol for pre- and postoperative evaluation of neurologic function in patients with intracranial disease is presented, and specialized monitoring techniques for neurologic intensive care are reviewed. ICP changes associated with specific intracranial lesions, [tumors, hematoma, hydrocephalus, subarachnoid hemorrhage, benign intracranial hypertension, infratentorial lesions] are considered, together with the indications for and effects of therapy directed toward reduction of intracranial hypertension.
