Abstract
The intensity distribution of the five branches in the a 1Πg←X 1Σg+ system of N2 has been analyzed in detail. The results are in agreement with theory (Chiu) and with line strengths calculated by Chiu give a ratio Q/D=0.33 between the relative transition probabilities of electric quadrupole (Q) to magnetic dipole (D). These results suggest a need for a theoretical study of these matrix elements in electric‐quadrupole and magnetic‐dipole transitions. Keywords
