Abstract
Vitamin C was methylated and the dimethyl compound treated with p-nitro-benzoyl-chloride; this derivative when broken down with ozone, yielded 1 molecule tri-hydroxy butyric, 1 of oxalic acid, and 2 of p-nitro benzoic acid. From these and other reactions, the vitamin appears to be a ring structure of the furanose type with 2 hydroxyls on the same side of the ring and with two possible enol forms. The pyra-nose ring is excluded since furfural is formed on heating with HCL.This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
