Commentary on the temperature dependence of the elastic constant C44 of MgF2 and TiO2

Abstract
The temperature dependence of the single-crystal elastic constant C44 of rutile-structure MgF2 and TiO2 (rutile) has been measured between room temperature and 4.2 K. C44 of MgF2 is seen to exhibit anomalous softening below 50 K, similar to the softening observed in MnF2, NiF2, and ZnF2, while C44 of TiO2 shows normal behavior.
