Abstract
A study was made of 54 pregnancies in 42 diabetic women with regard to the effect of pregnancy on the diabetic state. In 38 patients, whose insulin dosage immediately prior to pregnancy was known, insulin dosage decreased slightly during the first 3 months of pregnancy, began to rise in the 5th month with the greatest increase in the 7th month. Just before delivery, the dosage was increased in 22 cases, unchanged in 10 cases, and decreased in 6 cases. After parturition an increased glucose tolerance was observed in 34 of the 39 cases. Of 41 patients who had received insulin before coming pregnant, 10 had increased dosage, 16 were unchanged, 12 reduced, and in 1 case insulin was discontinued after pregnancy. Keywords
