Chloroplast Lipids as Carbohydrate Reservoirs.

Abstract
The major lipids of chloroplasts are [beta]-galactosyl monoglyceride, [alpha]-galactosyl-(1[forward arrow]6)-[beta]-galactosyl monoglyceride, a glycosyl sulfate monoglyceride and phosphatidyl glycerol. Each contains a moiety involved in the carbohydrate metabolism of photosynthesis. Identification and analysis of galactolipids, sulfolipid and phospholipids in spinach chloroplasts and chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum are described.
