Abstract
Grossly and microscopically, the normal structures of the hamster periodontium are similar to those of the rat. A form of periodontal disease accompanied by subgingi-val impaction of coarse food particles and debris was common among aged stock animals and weanlings. It appeared that a unique type of periodontal disease associated with subgingi-val accumulations of a soft white material was induced by feeding a fine caries-producing diet. A lack of coarse bedding such as wood shavings may predispose to this affliction. Since the hamster appears to be highly susceptible to periodontal disease, it is recommended as a tool for research in perio-dontia.
