Abstract
An analytic model is presented that reveals the physical origin of the photonic band gap created by Bragg scattering of surface plasmon polaritons on gratings. The model leads to simple functional forms for the gap width, central frequency, and field distributions which are confirmed by comparison with numerical calculations and experimental data. Keywords
