Abstract
Cellular protein levels increase during incubation in glucose and a mixture of amino acids including those essential for growth. Cellular nucleic acid levels increase during incubation in glucose and a mixture of purines, pyrimidines and amino acids. Small amts. of nucleic acids are formed in the absence of added amino acids, and opt. synthesis occurs in the amino acid mixture opt. for protein synthesis. Purines and pyrimidines accelerate protein synthesis by cells incubated in glucose and amino acids. The rate of protein synthesis is zero when the cellular nucleic acid level is about 4%. The rate at which cells, incubated with glucose and glutamic acid, accumulate free glutamic acid varies inversely with the nucleic acid content.
