Species Differences in the Utilization of Glucose for Contractile Force by Isolated Perfused Hearts

Abstract
The effects of glucose, 200 mg/100 cc, were studied on 12 substrate depleted hearts of cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and rats. Rat hearts showed an average increase in contractile force equal to 51% of the original control before failure. The increases shown by the guinea pig, rabbit, and cat hearts were 12, 8 and 4%, respectively. Rate and coronary flow were unchanged. These results indicate the importance of spp. differences in evaluating the utilization of substrates by the heart.Keywords
