Abstract
We present in this paper a comprehensive study of the optical Stark effect of excitons in semiconductors. After a review of our experimental results, and of some theoretical interpretations, we develop a new treatment of the optical Stark effect in the framework of nonlinear optics. This allows one to take into account transient phenomena such as spectral and temporal oscillations and leads to a proper interpretation of the very surprising dynamics experimentally observed. Keywords
