Abstract
Previous studies of the sputtered atom ejection patterns from Ge (100) surfaces suggested the existence of a (111) focussing mechanism in the diamond lattice. These experiments have been extended to a study of the ejection patterns from Ge (111) and (110) surfaces. No preferential ejection along the (111) direction was observed from these surfaces. When the reconstructed surface models suggested by low energy electron diffraction are used, the analysis of collision sequences suggests that the only reconstruction likely to defocus (111) collision events will occur in the case of the (100) surface. All the ejection patterns reflect the surface symmetry. A crystallographic dependence of the transition temperature for annealing of the ion bombardment induced damage was detected. Keywords
