Abstract
The spin‐lattice relaxation time T1 of Rh(II) in a single crystal of ZnWO4 has been measured in the temperature range 1.5°—110°K. In the region 56°—110°K relaxation occurs by an Orbach process. From the temperature dependence of this process, the separation of the first excited Kramers doublet E′ from the ground doublet E″ is found to be 320 cm−1, and the lifetime of the excited state 1.7×10−11 sec. At low temperatures, the relaxation times are relatively short and depend upon the direction of the applied magnetic field H. With H aligned along the a, b, or c crystalline axes an anomalously strong dependence of T1 on temperature is observed. Keywords
