Abstract
A method for percussion over the region of the spleen is described which is useful to detect moderate splenomegaly in patients not having a palpable spleen. The "spleen percussion sign" is elicited by percussing with the pleximeter finger placed in the lowest intercostal space in the left anterior axillary line. In the normal subject a resonant note will persist throughout expiration and inspiration. With slight-to-moderate splenomegaly there may be a change in the percussion note from resonance during full expiration to dullness with full inspiration. A positive "spleen percussion sign" is considered present when such a change is elicited. Keywords
