Abstract
The behavior of a system of many coupled maps is examined numerically. The maps used are selected so that a single map has entirely trivial mode-locking behavior and only the coupled system displays subharmonic mode locking. Three variants of the map are examined, each with different results. None of the behaviors appears to be simply related to that displayed by a circle map, which exhibits mode-locking behavior typical of that found for systems with one effective degree of freedom. Keywords
