Abstract
A survey of the most prominent emission features produced by electron impact excitation of CO2 over the wavelength range of 1260–4500 Å has been completed. Emission cross sections were measured from threshold to 300 eV for the Ã2Hu→X̃2Πg and 2Σu+→ X̃2Πg electronic transitions of CO2+ produced by ionization excitation of CO2. Emission cross sections were also measured for the A1Π→X1Σ+ electronic transition of CO and the B2Σ+→ X2Σ+ electronic transition of CO+ produced by dissociative excitation of CO2. The vibronic intensities differed from those for electron excitation of CO. In addition, emission cross sections are presented for the 3S03P , 1304‐Å multiplet of OI, the 2D →2P0 , 1335‐Å multiplet of CII, and several atomic multiplets of CI produced by dissociative excitation of CO2. The relative energy variation of the emission cross section of the a3Π→X1Σ+ electronic transition of CO and of the 5S03P , 1356‐Å multiplet of OI were also measured. The processes leading to these emissions are discussed.
