Abstract
A novel approach and some new algorithms for the pole-assignment problem of a controllable time-invariant linear multivariable system with linear state or output feedback are presented. The main theme of the approach and the algorithms is to satisfy some constraints in the problem approximately. Various rank-1 update algorithms can then be derived depending on different extents to which the constraints are approximated. Functionals have to be minimized when eigenvectors of the closed-loop system are chosen. A perturbation analysis on the effect of the approximation and several numerical examples will be presented. Keywords
