Abstract
The effects of saturated dietary fats and different protein sources on gastric ulcers in pigs were studied in two experiments. Diets with hydrogenated cocoanut oil and soybean meal replacing the cod liver oil and casein in our original ulcerogenic diet were tested. The feeding of saturated instead of unsaturated dietary fats resulted in a reduction of the severity of gastric lesions. By partly replacing casein by soybean meal or by using soybean meal as the only source of protein (at a level of 27%) no ulcers, but some epithelial changes occurred in the stomachs. Swine on a ration containing 36% soybean meal, however, had 100% normal stomachs. The results are compared to some other reported studies. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
