Abstract
The line broadening theories of Smith et al., Voslamber and Bezzerides are discussed. These theories are related, and then it is shown that all of them depend on the same approximations. The unified theory is then compared to the first order contribution from an expansion formulated by Dufty, and a discussion of the unification is presented. Keywords
