Abstract
Screens consisting of superimposed, thin, transparent, luminescent layers were formed by evaporation in a vacuum. The color of the luminescent emission depends on the depth of penetration of the cathode rays into the bilayer screens. Due to the decrease in luminescent brightness after the phosphor layers are penetrated, the pure chromatic emission from both of the layers may be obtained. A particular screen consisting of aluminum/CaWO4[W] (blue)/ZnS[Mn] (yellow)/glass has been analyzed. The laws of color mixture are found to be obeyed. Optical interference effects in the screen produce a slight color shift in the emission. The basic ideas of the multilayer chromatic system are briefly discussed.
