Abstract
Measurements of the rates of collisional quenching of HgBr* (B 2Σ1/2) and HgI* (B 2Σ1/2) by He, Ne, N2, Ar, and Xe at densities up to about 2 amagat are reported in this paper. The quenching rates of the HgI* (C 2Π1/2) state by those gases are also determined and the branching ratio to the B state is found to be unity within experimental error. Additional quenching rates of HgI* (B) by CF3I and I2 are included. Keywords
