Abstract
Bastarrachea, Fernando (University of Wisconsin, Madison), David G. Anderson, and Dexter S. Goldman. Enzyme systems in the mycobacteria. XI. Evidence for a functional glycolytic system. J. Bacteriol. 82:94–100. 1961.—Cell-free extracts of the H37Ra strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis contain the enzymes, aldolase, phosphohexokinase, phosphohexoisomerase, and phosphoglucomutase. The first three enzymes have been purified; the characteristics of all these enzymes have been studied. The enzymes are similar to those isolated from animal tissue. A functional glycolytic system in the mycobacteria provides a mechanism for the formation of other metabolites from glycerol. Keywords
