Diurnal Temperature Patterns in Unrestrained Cows

Abstract
Radio telemetry was used to measure the temperature in 3 different locations within the bodies of unrestrained cows. The diurnal temperature pattern was measured over a 4-day period in the reticulum, the crop area, and in a pararectal area. The pararectal temperatures were most constant, but ranged between 34.4 and 39.2 C. Reticular temperatures varied from a low of 32 C, after drinking cold water, to a high of 40.5 C prior to feeding. The subcutaneous temperatures ranged from 31.9 to 38.4, depending on whether the animals were indoors or out and lying down or standing.
