Abstract
Mucormycosis (pulmonary in the first and generalized in the second case) caused death in 2 patients with diseases of the leukopoietic system who had been treated with corticosteroi''ds. In both instances the diagnosis was based on the morphology of the fungus elements in the tissue sections and in the 1st case also on culture of the infective parasite (Rhizopus oryzae). The malignity of the mucormycoses is explained chiefly by the ability of the respective fungi to invade arteries and veins. The mycotic emboli and infarctions (heart muscle, kidneys and spleen), which were observed in the second case, originated from a thrombo-ulcerative endocarditis of the aortic valve due to Mucor transported from blood vessels of the primarily infected lung. In agreement with reports in the literature, experimental mucormycoses in the mouse were influenced by amphotericin B.Keywords
