Abstract
SINCE 1924 the delayed relaxation of the ankle jerk has been considered pathognomonic of hypothyroidism.1 More recently experimenters have shown that the length of delay is a reliable index of hypothyroidism and that delayed relaxation occurs only in the condition of lowered thyroid activity.2 3 4 5 We have shown that the delay in relaxation of the reflex is present in some subjects who have no manifest thyroid abnormality.6 , 7 One patient, mentioned previously,6 had a relaxation time in the hypothyroid range in both ankles, and the difference in relaxation time between the two ankles was considerably greater than any we had seen in . . .Keywords
