Abstract
On the Structural Elucidation of Niphimycin, Part II. The Constitution of Demalonylniphimycin IA stepwise degradation of copiamycin and niphimycin I with ozone and sodium periodate, partly combined with D‐labelling, and intense spectroscopic investigations of the degradation products led to the structural formulae 34 for demalonylcopiamycin (in agreement with the structure proposed by Iwasaki et al. for the same antibiotic) and 38 for demalonylniphimycin. The antibiotics copiamycin and niphimycin are half esters of malonic acid and the macrolide polyols 34 and 38, resp., with uncertain positions of the malonyl residues.
