Abstract
Mercurial diuretics increase Na and C1 concn. in the urine, when the initial urinary concns. are below those of plasma, to levels that may exceed those in the plasma. When the urinary electrolyte concns. are increased beyond those of plasma by pituitrin or hypertonic NaCl infusions, the mercurials reduce the urinary Na and Cl concns., although there is a net increase in the excretion of these electrolytes per unit of time. The ability of the kidney to produce hypertonic urine and the antidiuretic response to pituitrin are not abolished by mercurial diuretics. The possible mechanisms of action of mercurial diuretics are discussed. Keywords
