EFFECT OF DRUGS ON RENAL SECRETION OF POTASSIUM IN THE DOG

Abstract
Renal excretion of K was studied in trained dogs by the clearance technic. Infusions of K salts produced K clearances greater than the glomerular filtration rate, indicating tubular secretion of K. Maximal reabsorption of K was observed during water diuresis. A variety of drugs which are known to affect other renal functions were studied. The mercurial diuretics produced the greatest change in K excretion. Their action was interpreted as a depression of both tubular reabsorption and secretion, the net effect depending on which tubular process was dominant at the time of drug admn.
