Abstract
The blood sugar of 149 pregnant diabetics was maintained at a low value by means of diet and insulin. To combat toxemia, hydramnios and edema, salt was restricted and the total amount of fluid was kept down. Incidence of hydramnios was 50% (> 1000 ml) or 20% (> 1500 ml) as determined by the present rough method, consisting of puncture of the membranes with a catheter and collection of the water. There was significantly less water in long-term treated patients than in short-termed treated patients. It was not possible to demonstrate which part of the treatment was the most decisive in keeping down the amount of water. There was no significant correlation between hydramnios and the duration of diabetes, diabetic retinitis, toxemia, fetal mortality or birth weight. Keywords
