Abstract
Comparing an extended form of the Landau‐de Gennes model for the order parameter with the free elastic energy for the director field of a nematic liquid crystal the temperature dependence of the Frank elastic constants is found. The theoretical results are in agreement with both the recent measurements and with molecular statistical theories. Keywords
